Why convert EPUB to MOBI?
- Older Kindles. MOBI loads on legacy Kindle models that won't accept EPUB.
- Side-load ready. Drop the MOBI onto a Kindle over USB or via Send-to-Kindle.
- One library, one format. Convert standalone EPUBs into the format the rest of your Kindle books use.
How it works
- Use the converter. Go to the Formatly EPUB to MOBI converter page. No signup is required.
- Upload your EPUB eBook. Drag and drop the EPUB file into the uploader, or browse from your device.
- Convert to MOBI. Choose MOBI as the target format and click the Convert button.
- Download the MOBI file. Click the Download button to save the converted MOBI file.
Good for
- Reading EPUB books on an older Kindle.
- Side-loading personal, DRM-free books to a Kindle.
- Standardizing a mixed library on Amazon's format.
Do you actually need MOBI? Check your Kindle first
Since mid-2022, Amazon's Send-to-Kindle service accepts EPUB files directly — and in late 2022 it dropped support for sending MOBI. So the right move depends on how your book gets onto the device:
- Modern Kindle + Send-to-Kindle (email or app). Skip the conversion entirely: send the EPUB as-is and Amazon converts it to Kindle format on their side. Emailing a MOBI to a recent Kindle may now be rejected.
- Legacy Kindle over USB. Early models — Kindle 1–3 (including the Kindle Keyboard) and the Kindle DX — read MOBI natively and cannot open EPUB at all. Dragging an EPUB onto a Kindle over USB won't work on any model; the device firmware never renders EPUB directly. For these devices, converting to MOBI is still the answer — that's this page.
- Kindle Touch / Paperwhite era or newer, side-loading over USB. These accept MOBI too, but AZW3 is the better target: it supports more of your book's original styling than the older MOBI format.
What survives the conversion
This converter runs Calibre's ebook-convert engine with its standard settings. In practice:
- Metadata. Title, author, series, and language carry over from the EPUB into the MOBI header, so the book files correctly in your Kindle library.
- Cover. The cover image is kept and shows in the library grid.
- Table of contents. The EPUB's clickable TOC is rebuilt as an inline MOBI table of contents, placed at the end of the book (Calibre's default) — chapter navigation via the Kindle's Go To menu still works.
- Styling. MOBI is an older format with simpler CSS support, so advanced layout — embedded fonts, floats, elaborate styling — gets simplified. Body text and images carry across.
