What this converter outputs
There are no settings to tune — every GIF comes out of the same fixed, palette-optimized ffmpeg pipeline:
- 10 frames per second. Smooth enough for UI walkthroughs and social loops while keeping file size in check.
- 480 pixels wide. Height scales to keep your video's aspect ratio, using Lanczos scaling for sharp downsizing.
- Two-pass custom palette. A first pass builds a 256-color palette from your actual footage; a second pass encodes the GIF against it. That's noticeably cleaner color than one-pass converters that map every video to the same generic palette.
As a rough guide, expect somewhere between a few hundred KB and ~2 MB per second of footage: a screen recording with mostly static frames lands at the low end, handheld camera video with constant motion at the high end.
Clip length: the honest limits
Uploads are capped at 20 MB, and processing runs under a hard time limit of about two minutes — so a very long video can fail even if it fits under the size cap. Since GIF stores roughly 10 full frames for every second of runtime, long clips also balloon in size fast. The sweet spot is clips under about 15–30 seconds; trim your video first if it's longer.
When to keep MP4 instead of GIF
GIF is capped at 256 colors per frame, has no audio, and is usually many times larger than the same clip as MP4. Often the video is the better artifact:
- Embedding in your own web page. A muted, looping HTML5 video (
<video muted autoplay loop playsinline>) autoplays just like a GIF at a fraction of the size, with full color. - Posting to social platforms. Most major platforms re-encode uploaded GIFs to video anyway — uploading the MP4 directly skips a quality-losing round trip.
- GIF wins where video isn't accepted or won't autoplay: GitHub READMEs and docs sites, chat tools and email clients that inline images but not video, and CMS fields that only take images.
FAQ
What is the maximum video file size I can convert to GIF? You can upload videos (such as MP4 files) up to 20 MB. Since animated GIFs can become quite large in file size, we recommend converting short clips or screen recordings.
Will the resulting GIF have audio? No. The GIF file format is strictly an image format and does not support sound. Any audio tracks in the source video will be discarded during conversion.
